Default Fraser recaps ArkLaMiss Conference

I attended my first ArkLaMiss circulation conference November 5 and 6 at Vicksburg, Mississippi, and came home with a notebook full of ideas on how to increase our paid circulation numbers.
The Riverwalk Casino Hotel proved to be an excellent location for the event. The facilities were new, clean and more than adequate for a conference of this size. Around 65 were in attendance for the meeting.
Max Heath did an outstanding job with two sessions: one on circulation promotions and general circulation information and ideas; and one on postal regulations and new changes in the postal system with tips on how to save money on newspaper postal charges. He also shared tips on how to improve postal delivery service.
The Hot Ideas session was very good with many of the atendees bringing samples of promotion materials to show and share with the group. This was one of the best idea sharing sessions I have ever attended, and I took plenty of notes. As always, meeting folks from other newspapers and sharing ideas, is one of the most valuable facets of a professional conference.
I feel that in this time of financial difficulies in the newspaper industry, paid circulation is crucial to our survival. I have always felt that we, as an industry, don't put enough emphasis on continued training for our staff. This is one area in our budgets that shouldn't be cut, even in tough times. If anything, training may be even more important in tough times. I always return from a professional conference with a renewed dedication, and eager to try new ideas.
I believe circulation is a sales department, even more so than advertising, which I consider to be a service department. The idea exchange session at the ArkLaMiss conference offered more good circulation sales ideas and promotions than I have ever seen at one place. This was my first circulation conference, but it won't be my last.
