Default Ideas, Ideas, Ideas

By Angelia Roberts, Executive Director of Ad/Ed, Batesville Daily Guard

NOTE: Author was one of ten Arkansas newspaper employees who received an Arkansas Newspaper Foundation Continuing Education Grant to attend the 2013 ArkLaMiss Circulation Conference.

After attending the Ark/La./Miss conference I couldn’t wait to get back to the office to get motivated on some new projects. Many of these ideas cost us nothing, but are a great opportunity to keep our readers involved with our daily publication.
The first day back we printed our acknowledgment of a daily subscriber on the front page of our paper hoping it will keep them looking for their name each day. In our line of work, we forget just how exciting it is to others to see their name in print.
Idea one: Started!
Our Realtors spend a great deal of money with us and we are going to work with them after they close the deal to have gift cards available for a limited time free subscription to the Batesville Daily Guard.
We also want to discuss the feasibility of teaming up with some of our local advertisers for give-aways to build excitement, as well as our subscriber base. Because of time constraints, we decided to do our own giveaway with a 50-inch television. Those who buy and pay for a one-year subscription will be entered into the drawing. We immediately got enough new subscribers to pay for the idea. It has been so successful that our regular subscribers have paid for a year, as well. This means we don’t have to spend time sending out notice until this time next year! The drawing took place on Dec. 20
Idea two: In motion!
The conference was also an opportunity to feel better about some of our products. Our magazine ideas, especially one dedicated to the Bar Association, generated a lot of excitement from other participants since it is un-tapped revenue.
Another idea is to get with high school teachers to tap into those “wanna-be writers” and give them an opportunity to see their stories in print. We hope this will bring readership of that age group back to the newspaper either in print or by way of electronic media.
Our list of ideas are long and the conference was a much-needed shot in the arm to get excited about the job we love.
I have to say this is one of the best conferences I have attended in years. I always come away with more dos and don’ts from round table discussions than with guest speakers. Those in the trenches know best what works and what doesn’t and there seemed to be a lot of excitement from many of those who were in attendance.
In addition, the conference was a wonderful opportunity for continued networking. Thumbs up to the organizers of the event. We hope to keep our excitement going until the next one.
