For several years now Arkansas Newspaper in Education (NIE) has co-produced a coloring and poetry contest each winter. Developed by Stamp Out Smoking, the contests are tailored for students of all ages and aimed at educating them about the harms associated with tobacco use.
Contest graphics, layouts, fact sheets, rules and prize lists for the 2008 contests are now available online at APA’s Web site in the NIE section— http://www.arkansaspress.org/niemain An item appears at upper left area of that page, and clicking either the graphic or the “go” button will take visitors to the downloads page for the contest materials. Clicking the appropriate link to the right of each entry will automatically begin the download. Some materials will appear without a link (clickable text), indicating that those particular items are not yet available. Those interested in participating in the contests are encouraged to check the downloads page frequently, though, in the event that those materials are added in the future. However, none of the unavailable items are integral to conducting a contest and there is no reason to wait for them before launching a competition. The NIE/SOS programs are excellent ways for newspapers to promote literacy in their communities, support local schools, activate a positive public relations campaign and generate revenue through sponsorships.
