Default Sunshine Week begins March 16

Sunshine Week, a non-partisan open government initiative led by the American Society of Newspaper Editors (ASNE), will be held March 16-22. The annual event brings together the press, online and broadcast media, public officials, celebrities, civic groups, non-profit groups, libraries, schools, religious leaders and others. It is primarily funded by a challenge grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

A wealth of new materials are now available to help bring attention to Sunshine Week 2008 and raise awareness about the importance of open government and citizen oversight. The materials, including print and Web ads, brochures, editorial cartoons and merchandise, are available at the Sunshine Week Campaign’s official Web site: sunshineweek.org.

New print and Web ads have been created in both English and Spanish and may be used by any participant free of charge now, during Sunshine Week (March 16-22), and through the November 2008 elections. Featuring the Sunshine Campaign “spokesmammals,” Ronnie and Donnie, as well as the “Vote for Sunshine” campaign button imagery, the ads remind people that open government is a non-partisan issue and a right shared by everyone.

The campaign has also developed a full-color tri-fold brochure about “Sunshine Week 2008: The Sunshine Campaign,” and it, too, can be downloaded from the Web site. The two sides should be printed back-to-back and then the page folded into thirds, with the campaign button ending up as the cover and the Sunshine Week and Sunshine Campaign pages facing each other. Thousands of the brochures are being distributed during Project Vote Smart Purple Bus Tour.

There are Sunshine Week logos, as well, in color and black-and-white jpegs, in horizontal and vertical layouts. The logos may be used during, in advance promotion for, and/or in relation to Sunshine Week 2008. Visitors can find new editorial cartoons to be used by any participant free of charge in the context of his/her Sunshine Week coverage and/or activities.

Additional materials will be made available as the week nears, so supporters are encouraged to check the Web site frequently.
