Default SOS Coloring Contest Update and Info

2009 Tobacco Education – Newspapers in Education
Coloring Contest Information
Arkansas Press Association Newspapers in Education
501-374-1500
479-936-6471

The Stamp Out Smoking coloring sheet may be used for a locally sponsored coloring contest. This feature is available to run in the newspaper from April through May. Newspapers have their choice of sizes for publication, or the feature may be reprinted from the attached copy. The artwork and rules WILL BE available at http://www.arkansaspress.org/niemain.html after February 27, 2009. Just follow the NIE links. (All activities are aligned to the state educational standards.)

Contest information for newspapers:
• Contest must be implemented during the following dates: April 1 – May 30, 2009. The contest should be completed before June 3, 2009. Run the contest one week or for several weeks. Over the past years, several newspapers have sold block advertising below the coloring contest for a three- to four-week revenue generating feature! Others found a single sponsor for the entire run of the contest.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION:
• Coloring Contest is open to children in grades Pre-K through Kindergarten. No purchase necessary.
• There is space in the bottom right corner for newspaper or sponsor recognition.
• There are three artwork designs to choose from.
• I have been notified that prizes will be delivered prior to the first week of March 2009. Please adjust your contest deadlines accordingly. If you do not receive prizes, please contact me at (karenb@commpub.com).
• The Stamp Out Smoking logo may not be altered in any way – other than resizing as needed.
• In order to receive prizes for your newspaper, you must have registered with Karen Brown.
• Each newspaper should add a specific deadline to each of the contest rules as well as the following information: (See files at http://www.arkansaspress.org/niemain.html) See other info to include on the following page.

Coloring Contest Rules to include:
(The basic outline for rules will be provided. Blank spaces will be available
for you to fill in the required information. See below.)

• Deadline for submissions
• Place or address where submissions should be returned
• Date for announcement of winners
• Location where coloring contest entries will be displayed, if applicable.

• Prizes will be delivered directly to each newspaper. In total, each paper will receive six backpacks, two art kits, four highlighters, four suckers, four packs of crayons and four sharpeners.
Prizes are the responsibility of the CJRW Agency. Each newspaper will be asked to distribute the prizes to winners after the prizes are received at the newspaper office from the agency.

• You may resize the coloring contest page as much as you like! If you do not want to publish the coloring sheets in the newspaper, take the sheets to the school or use them to draw traffic into your newspaper office. Be creative! Use house ads to tell your readers about the coloring contest. This is a great PR piece as well as a health education piece! You are encouraged to seek out sponsors or partnerships. You may also wish to include additional appropriate editorials, ads, or features.

Sponsorship: Please be advised that because of the collaborative nature of this project, when seeking sponsorships the following criteria should be adhered to: No beer, tobacco or alcohol related businesses or adult bookstores, etc., should be considered for sponsorships. Thank you. If you have any questions about this, please contact Karen Brown at (479) 936-6471 or karenb@commpub.com

You will experience more success with the contest if you run it for 2-3 consecutive weeks. Sponsorship ideas: health agencies, insurance companies, medical clinics, doctor offices, dental offices, children’s interest, bookstores, drugstores, etc.

If you have any questions, please contact Karen at karenb@commpub.com.
