Default NIE Week (next week) focuses on "Cybersafety"

Newspaper in Education Week, a national initiative for teachers and newspapers to provide new tools for education, is next week, March 3-7. Karen Brown, director of the APA’s statewide Newspaper in Education program, has been busy developing new materials for local NIE coordinators and teachers across the state. The emphasis this year is on Internet safety, and, in conjunction with CyberSmart! Curriculum, a number of features have been created and are now available in the NIE Section of the Arkansas Press Association Web site— /niemain.

An extensive links page has also been developed, bringing in an array of resources from the Newspaper Association of America Foundation, NAASA’s “FSI: Fraud Scene Investigator,” NASA's award-winning Space Place outreach program, The Franklin Institute, the Advertising Icon Museum and many other organizations. Those links can be found at www.arkansaspress. org/teachers-resourc.

Some of these materials were just added yesterday, so those participating in NIE Week should keep an eye on the NIE Web pages.

Also taking place during the week is the annual NIE/Stamp Out Smoking tobacco education contests. The initial materials were made available earlier this month, but several additions for the poetry contest were made recently. Follow the link above to the NIE front page for more information.
