Now available from the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation: Sarah Campbell: The Tale of a Civil War Orphan is a Civil War story in 14 chapters by award-winning Arkansas author Nancy Dane. The serial is provided free to Arkansas Press Association member newspapers, as Dane created the story for the Arkansas Newspaper Foundation literacy programs.

Here is a short synopsis of the story: When bushwhackers slay Sarah Campbell's parents she is taken to the Union garrison at Fort Smith. However, her troubles are far from over, one in the form of a bully named Kate. Sarah does make friends, William and Henry, also orphans. Together they face an invading army, kidnappers, and treacherous enemy spies, only to learn an enemy can become a friend worthy of great sacrifice.

The story setting is in Arkansas during the Civil War. This story is appropriate for upper elementary, middle school, high school, and others interested in Civil War stories. The story also lends itself to an open discussion of the problem of bullying.
