National Sunshine Week is March 14-20

This year's Sunshine Week celebration, to be observed March 14-20, will honor individuals who fought tirelessly last year to make their state or local public institutions more open and accessible. During Sunshine Week, media organizations and other groups throughout the nation will highlight the efforts of these “Local Heroes” whose work has made their communities better places to live.

In addition to that coverage, the American Society of News Editors (ASNE) will conduct a contest to identify the top three Local Heroes of 2010. The first-place winner will receive an all expenses paid trip in April to Washington, D.C., to be honored at the 2010 ASNE convention. All of the winners will be profiled on the Sunshine Week Web site, and their accomplishments will be publicized by Sunshine Week staff and participating groups. Anyone can nominate a "Local Hero" from his area simply by going to the Sunshine Week Web site filling out a simple online form before February 26, 2010, the cut-off date.

Sunshine Week, launched in 2005 by ASNE, is held annually to promote dialogue about the importance of open government and freedom of information. Participants include hundreds of print, broadcast and online news media, civic groups, libraries, nonprofits, schools and others interested in the public's right to know.

Arkansas Sunshine Week Coordinators Brenda Blagg and Eric Francis are preparing a mailing with more information that will be sent to all Arkansas Publisher Weekly subscribers and Freedom of Information Coalition members. It will be distributed shortly, so those on the lists should keep an eye open.

More information and an array of promotional materials are available at www.sunshineweek.org. Questions and comments can be emailed to Brenda or Eric.

Blagg calls for Sunshine Week heroes

In a communique distributed to all APA newspapers and members of the Arkansas Freedom of Information Coalition yesterday, Brenda Blagg called for nominations for “local heroes” in conjunction with Sunshine Week 2010. Blagg, regional editor for the Springdale Morning News, is one of this year’s Sunshine Week Coordinators for Arkansas. The other is Freedom of Information Coalition member Eric Francis of dogtownwriter.com.

This year National Sunshine Week, March 14-20, will feature a Local Heroes Contest to recognize people across the country who made a difference last year fighting to make public institutions more open and accessible. Organizers are seeking nominations from all parts of the country.

The deadline for nominating a “local hero,” is February 26, so Blagg is calling for nominations from localities across Arkansas. Nominations can be made on the Sunshine Week Web site: www.sunshineweek.org, and more information on the contest can be found there. Questions and comments should be directed to Blagg (foiarkansas@gmail.com) or Francis (Eric.Francis@yahoo.com).
