Newly-mandated safety vests available

The new high-visibility safety vests ordered by the Arkansas Press Association have arrived, and pre-orders for the vests are now being filled.

The first of the vests went out to APA members ordering them earlier this month, well ahead of the November 24 deadline to be in compliance with a new Federal Highway Administration order requiring workers on the highways to wear the vests.

Reporters and photographers are included in those “workers” on the highways covering accidents and incidents.

The APA vests are lime green with florescent orange trim and are imprinted with “PRESS” across the back. The vests sell for $20 each including tax and shipping. The vests are presently available in large and extra large. Other sizes will be added to subsequent orders for the vests.

As reported here previously, the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) will soon require all “workers” on the highways to wear safety vests in compliance with several physical requirements on Nov. 24. Newspaper reporters and photographers covering accidents or other occurrences on or near highways are included in the definition of “workers” within the scope of the regulation.

The Arkansas Press Association has an inventory of safety vests that comply with the FHWA stipulations. They are lime green with fluorescent orange trim and are imprinted with “PRESS” across the back. Each sells for $20.00, which includes taxes and shipping and handling. APA has four sizes in inventory—medium, large, X-large and XX-large. XXX-large and XXXX-large sizes can be special ordered.
