2008 Better Newspaper Contests

The APA Contest Committee will be meeting next Friday, December 14th. If you would like to make suggestions please feel free to share your ideas here.

Advertising contest rules will be mailed Dec. 17th. Deadline for entries is January 31, 2008. Awards will be given March 13th during the 2008 Advertising Conference.

Editorial contest rules will be mailed in January 2008. Deadline for entries is March 31, 2008. Awards will be given July 12th during the SuperConvention in Little Rock.

Both contests will be judged by the Alabama Press Association.

I'm still mourning the loss of the photographer's portfolio category, and I think a writer's portfolio would be worth considering. As weekly staffers, our primary strength is having individuals who can do many things well. Portfolio categories recognize that.

We are about to introduce a new website, totally designed by our staff, but I would rather see portfolio categories than anything for websites.

Following the meeting of the APA Contest Committee on Friday, Dec. 14, revised rules for the 2008 Better Newspaper Advertising Contest were mailed to all the association’s members on Wednesday. Entry forms were included.

The deadline for submitting entries for next year’s contest has been set for January 31, 2008. In order to be eligible for the competition all entries must be received or postmarked by that date.

Newspapers are being encouraged to designate a staff member who will be in charge of gathering entries and seeing that all of the paperwork and submissions are completed on time. Many previous competitions have involved the sad story of a newspaper interested in competing that simply missed the deadline.
