A Word From the Author
This
new 224 page book titled, "Learning, Earning & Giving Back" retails for
$15.95 and could aptly be called, "A Manual For Successful Daily Living."
It is chock full of stories, ideas, quotes and concepts that will lift your
spirits, make you think, make you laugh and make you cry but most of all
it will give you hope and encouragement to face an unstable and uncertain
world. Another benefit is that you could not find a better or more perfect
gift for the special people in your life, whether for Christmas, Graduations,
Weddings, Anniversaries or just because you love them. It is with
deep gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the educators and newspaper
people who have been so supportive over the past 30 plus years, that I am
"giving back" $6 for every book sold, to local newspapers for their Newspaper
In Education (NIE) programs and other newspaper or community projects, and
an additional $3 to state press associations and foundations, to help them
to provide journalism scholarships and to support other journalism education
programs.
I am very much indebted to the nine awardwinning journalists who selected
the 49 columns that make up the content and they are prominently featured
in the book. My special thanks also go to S. Truett Cathy, Founder of the
Billion Dollar Chick-fil-A restaurant chain who wrote the foreword. There
is something here for everyone as we have designed house ads for papers that
have an NIE program, papers that do not have NIE, papers that do not have
NIE but want to use the profits to support a community project like building
a new library, and for papers that wish to use the book as a "Subscriber
Premium" to increase subscriptions.
As my good friend, C. Dennis Schick, Executive Director of the Arkansas
Press Association, says, "It is a win, win, win, win situation." Readers
WIN who get a terrific book, students in school WIN who are studying the
newspaper in the classroom through an NIE program, newspapers WIN who have
additional revenue to provide more community services, and state press foundations
WIN because they can provide a greater number of scholarships to students
who want to pursue a career in journalism.
After you have read the book, I believe you will agree that all the elements
are here to have a highly successful "Giving Back" campaign that will help
thousands, if not millions of people. To maximize our potential we must put
names and faces of those who are the beneficiaries in feature stories, ads
and other printed and electronic media to get the word out to people in every
city and community across this great land. My prayer is that you will see
the vision and will want to get involved. Together, we CAN make a difference.
